A note from Jonathan
There is a three-fold feedback loop between being a singer, conductor, and composer. Each discipline informs the other.
I hope my music brings emotional catharsis to communities. Music is a great healer and joy-maker. I don't write music to be "important." I want to share it with an audience and contribute something positive. A large body of my music is sacred choral, but I've also written secular and instrumental works. I have many works in print with traditional publishers but have decided to make more of it directly available to the public. My pieces are generally short, similar to art songs by Schubert, Duparc, or Samuel Barber. I enjoy small forms and concentrated musical ideas. I am a synesthete. I see colors and shapes when I hear music. This phenomenon appears regularly in my music. Particular keys and musical textures elicit abstract shapes and colors in my mind. I strive to write music that is objectively well crafted (only you can judge if I succeed). I value good voice leading, singable/playable parts, interesting harmonic development and form. I am always trying to improve in these disciplines. I write "art music," i.e. "classical." |
Much of my work is serious, but I also enjoy writing humorous music, such as the Drinking Songs and Bulletin Bloopers. Even though they are for fun they are still carefully crafted: the joke isn't funny if the music crumbles at the seams. Choirs should strive to sing them well.
